Art & Fear
... heißt das Buch, das ich neulich schonmal im Ansatz erwähnte. Nachdem ich es nun auch endlich zum zweiten Mal durchhabe, wollte ich auch noch ein paar Worte dazu verlieren.
Der Untertitel lautet "Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking" und ist sehr treffend. Vor allem versucht das Buch, Kunst — also insbesondere das Erschaffen von Kunst — zu entmystifizieren und beschreibt, dass Kunst nicht von Genies, sondern von ganz normalen Menschen gemacht wird und schon immer wurde:
Your art does not arrive miraculously from the darkness, but is made uneventfully in the light.Und zu den zumindest mir wohlbekannten "Aber das taugt doch alles nichts"-Gedanken gibt es auch ein paar Weisheiten, wie zum Beispiel:
The function of the overwhelming majority of your artwork is simply to teach you how to make the small fraction of your artwork that soars.und:
Consider the story of the young student [...] who began piano studies with a Master. After a few months' practice, [he] lamented to his teacher, "But I can hear the music so much better in my head than I can get it out of my fingers."
To which the Master replied, "What makes you think that ever changes?"Dazu gibt es praktische Tipps (z.B. zum Thema "auch mal Sachen anfangen, die sich nicht anfühlen, als würden sie das definitive Meisterwerk"):
For most artists, making good art depends upon making lots of art, and any device that carries the first brushstroke to the next blank canvas has tangible, practical value.Gedanken über das Wesen von Kunst an sich:
The scientist, if asked whether a given experiment could be repeated with identical results, has to say yes — or it wouldn't be science. — Gene FowlerAuch wenn ich nicht jedem Gedanken in dem Buch zustimme, vor allem wegen einiger unterschiedlicher Grundannahmen, hat es mir beide Male sehr geholfen, mein Schreiben — wie in den Zitaten hoffentlich zu erkennen ist, ist es aber bewusst nicht auf eine Kunstform zugeschnitten — mit neuem Elan zu betrachten.
(Der Vollständigkeit halber sollte ich noch Robert Rodriguez dankend erwähnen, der das Buch im Audiokommentar von "Spy Kids 2" erwähnt hat.)
